SciPAC Awards

The Scientist Professional Advisory Committee (SciPAC) established the Scientist of the Year Awards in 1995 to recognize Commissioned Officers in the Scientist Category whose professional career and work performance have resulted in significant contributions to the health of the Nation and to the mission of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). One award recognizes the career achievement of a senior-level Officer, and one is to acknowledge the contributions of a junior-level Officer. In the past, the Surgeon General on behalf of the SciPAC has presented the awards at the national meeting of the Commissioned Officers Association (COA). A committee composed of senior-level Scientist Officers generally makes the selection of the award recipients. Recipients of the awards receive a plaque signed by the Surgeon General and the Chief Scientist Officer (CSO), and a special letter of recognition from the SciPAC.

Because there is no means by which the SciPAC is able to directly notify supervisors of the availability of these awards, scientist officers are encouraged to ask their supervisors to consider nominating them for these awards.

 SciPAC Mentoring Program

This program provides mentoring services to officers in the Scientist category. This effort is achieved by recruiting senior, experienced officers to serve as Mentors and advisors to officers in need of career guidance. Mentors are paired with Mentees based on, but not limited to the following: similar career paths, field of expertise, agency, and rank. Mentors provide one-on-one career guidance to officers in the areas of career assignments, mobility, awards, deployments, curriculum vitae review, career strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations
to enhance promotion potential.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor, or if you are seeking an mentor, please contact the chair of the Mentoring Subcommittee, CDR Boris Aponte at boris.aponte@ahrq.hhs.gov

SciPAC Recruitment Program

Currently, general recruitment issues specifically aimed at officers in the Scientist Professional Advisory Committee (SciPAC) are handled by the Recruitment, Readiness, and Retention Subcommittee. The subcommittee strives to enhance efforts to recruit highly qualified Scientist officers and optimize the preparedness of Scientists to serve during public health emergencies. Historically, recruitment efforts and related issues were handled through the USPHS Associate Recruitment Program. However, as the official Associate Recruitment Program is currently under reorganization and structuring, OCCO requests that all officers, including scientist officers, participate in various recruitment activities. Additional information on the Associate Recruitment Program and developments should be directed to Nelson Adekoya at nba7@cdc.gov.
